The Nest

Project type

Abandoned Homes

Date

April 2025

Location

South Carolina

This house had been pinned on my map for quite some time, while not too far from me, I still never managed to go out and see it until one random sunny day presented the perfect atmosphere to make the short drive down quaint country roads, to be greeted with this cute little home. Initially I didn't know much about it, and to be honest, I didn't gather it would have too much important history attached to it - however I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I was wrong. After posting it to facebook, as I do most of my explores, I got a lot more reactions to this one than I expected. One of which was a message from a kind local who also loves exploring - he informed me the home was once the childhood home of Larry Koon. Larry served in the South Carolina House of Representatives as a member of the Republican Party from 1975 to 2004, representing Lexington County, South Carolina. He passed away in 2021 at the age of 77 leaving behind his wife and children, who still reside in Lexington. It was an interest find to say the least, exploring tends to usher conversations with strangers in to my life that I don't think I would have the opportunity to have otherwise, just another reminder of the power being urban exploration and the many layers of our lives it can touch if we let it.
