Abandoned Homes

Date

May 2025

Location

South Carolina

On the way back to my car one day while exploring with a friend, we couldn't help but notice this little home hiding on the side of the road. A quick u-turn and before we knew it, we were inside. While quaint, it was quite something. A piano sat in the center of the home, something I see often in abandoned houses around here, I assume they're a challenge to move so they often get left behind. Sad, but true.

Another sad discovery was the remains of what I assume was a cat. Only bones were left, while this is something I've come across multiple times now, I always wonder how this happens. Sometimes I think they find their way in to these homes just situated off the road after maybe being struck by a car, but this time, it almost seemed as if the cat was forgotten.. it breaks my heart, being a die hard animal lover - this hobby is sometimes so hard for these reasons - at the same time, while out exploring, I do my share of rescuing, anything - I'm often the one getting left behind because I'm freeing a wasp from a spider web or helping a turtle across the road or making friends with stray cats.. in any case, seeing animal remains is never easy for me, wishing I could've been there to save them is just my instinctual nature, so being in this house and having all of these emotions come up was difficult but I chose to respect the space even more so and exit quickly to leave things be.

Exploring is fun and rewarding, it's therapeutic, sometimes in ways we don't expect but I live every moment to the absolute fullest, absorbing the sad emotions is a part of that sometimes, I carry some peace with me knowing that while someone may have forgotten an animal, if I cross paths with one, in any condition, I will always carry them with me in memory, so it no longer goes on forgotten.
